What I trying to do is removing the non-virus clause and adding the following line: Specific permission is granted for the GPLed code in this distribition to be linked to OpenSSL without invoking GPL clause 2(b). Since fetchmail removed the non-virus clause, there's no reason to keep the clause any longer (it spoils the intention of GPL anyway).
